Just the two of us

I can't believe how much we've done today. If Gabriel doesn't go to bed tired tonight, my name's not Mumma.

We kicked the morning off with cinnamon rolls and coffee before soccer. Gabriel's soccer season has been a little less than stellar. We're about six games into the season and G hasn't seen a whole lot of the field. Not because the coaches aren't trying but because he's not always in the mood. Sometimes he'd rather sit on the sidelines with Daddy and other times he'd prefer to kick the ball 300 yards in the wrong direction, crossing about 10 soccer fields that aren't his team's in the process. It didn't really matter since the whole 3-year-old league is complete chaos anyway. Well, oddly enough, today he did just fine. Daddy was MIA and with just Mommy on the sidelines, he listened to his coach, did the drills, participated in the game and, get this, stayed within the boundaries of his team's soccer field. He'd even run up to me when he finished a drill, give me a high five and run back to his teammates. Coincidence that he decided to focus on the day Daddy wasn't there and Mumma was the only game in town? Hmmm...

I'd promised a quick spin at the Thomas the Tank Engine table at B&N if he did well at soccer, so we hit up B&N and Target on the way home. Then this afternoon we ventured back out to see Horton Hears a Who at the theater. Gabriel loved it though he was less than thrilled about Vlad the Vulture (it's cool; Vlad also came around and recognized that a person's a person, no matter how small). The weather's been so great that to make up for spending an hour and a half in a dark theater, we spent the rest of the afternoon at not one, but two, neighborhood parks.

Eve, this photo's for you. Thanks for the shirt. Go Tigers.

It's kind of fun parenting on your own from time to time. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to make a regular habit of it. But when super-fun Daddy's away and I'm the only game in town, I get a lot more bonding time. That being said, I'm going to need an awfully big glass of wine after G goes to bed.

This blog was born in the summer of 2007. We'd just bought a very old house and our son, who had recently turned two, was beginning to say some very funny things. I figured I'd use the blog to document both the house's changes and his. Since then, we've embarked on our second adoption--one day soon, we hope to bring home a daughter from Ethiopia. Somewhere along the way, this blog replaced all the unfinished baby books, scrapbooks and journals that we all start and restart throughout our lives to prove that we were here.
